Vengeance is sure

Beloved in Christ,
Today, we are gathered here to explore the profound, yet humbling realities of God’s vengeance and the assurance that comes from living in His divine will. Our text for reflection will be taken from Ezekiel 18:1-4, 2 Samuel 22:28, Jeremiah 46:10, and Romans 12:19, which powerfully encapsulate the essence of this message.
The divine message is clear. In this life, we sow the seeds of our deeds, whether in kindness, love, wickedness, or hatred, and we shall reap the rewards, be they good or bad. It’s a powerful truth that we must embrace – we are accountable for our actions before our Creator, and our choices have consequences. Nevertheless, Ezekiel makes it clear that anyone saved by Christ will not suffer their parents’ punishments. As we navigate our journey through life, we must remember to tread carefully, for we are not immune to the laws of divine retribution.
Here are some basic points I want us to note:
- Vengeance is the Lord’s:
The Bible unequivocally teaches us that vengeance belongs to the Lord. We must not be tempted to take matters into our own hands, for it is not ours to avenge. Instead, let us surrender our desires for retaliation to God, trusting in His perfect justice and timing. 2 Samuel 22:28
- The folly of fighting battles ourselves:
In Jeremiah 46:10, we are cautioned against vain temperament and the folly of preparing for the day of vengeance ourselves. In our quest for vengeance, we often find ourselves entangled in futile battles, exhausting ourselves in vain attempts to right the wrongs we perceive. However, God urges us to release our grievances to Him, for only He can bring about true and lasting justice.
- The power of persistent prayer:
We are presented with the parable of the persistent widow in Luke 18:5-8, whose unwavering faith and continuous supplication moved the heart of her Lord. Let us emulate her example, my dear congregation, and not grow weary in our prayers. For God hears our cries, and in His time, He will answer – His vengeance will be swift and just.
I tell my children never to look down on anyone, because we don’t know tomorrow.. Prophet Akintunde Akinniyi
Beloved, let us not be tempted to take matters into our own hands, for that is not our place. Let us trust in the Lord, knowing that He will reward us diligently and avenge us in due time.
May the Holy Spirit guide us and grant us ears to hear and hearts to receive His word. Amen.
