Jehovah — The self-existent one

Text: Psalm 90:2

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

Introduction

The name Jehovah reveals one of the deepest truths about God. It tells us that God exists by Himself. He is not created, He is not dependent, and He is not limited by time. Long before the mountains stood tall, before the oceans flowed, before humanity breathed its first breath, Jehovah already existed.
When God revealed Himself to Moses, He did not give a name that depended on anything in creation. Instead, He said:
Exodus 3:14
“I AM THAT I AM.”
This means God is the Self-Existing One, the God who depends on nothing yet sustains everything.

  1. Jehovah Exists From Eternity
God is eternal. Eternity is not just long time; it is existence without beginning and without end.
Psalm 90:2 declares that God existed before the earth was formed. Everything we see had a starting point.
    The mountains had a beginning
    The oceans had a beginning
    Humanity had a beginning
    But God has no beginning.
    Isaiah 40:28
“The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.”
God never grows old, never weakens, and never fades. Time does not control Him; He controls time.

    Illustration
Imagine someone asking, “Who created God?”
That question comes from a human mind that thinks everything must have a beginning. But God is the beginning of all beginnings.
    Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the Ending… the Almighty.”
Jehovah stands outside time yet works within time to fulfil His purpose.

  2. Jehovah Is the Uncaused Cause
Everything in existence has a cause.
    A building has a builder
    A painting has a painter
    A child has parents
But God has no cause. He is the first cause of all things.
    Genesis 1:1
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Scripture does not try to explain where God came from because He never came from anywhere. He simply exists.
    Acts 17:24–25
“God, who made the world and everything in it… gives to all life, breath, and all things.”
This means God is the source of life.
Your heartbeat continues because Jehovah sustains it.

  3. Jehovah Is Self-Sufficient
    Human beings are dependent creatures.
    We depend on:
    Food to live
    Air to breathe
    Sleep to function
    Strength to work
    But Jehovah depends on nothing.
    John 5:26
“For as the Father has life in Himself…”
God does not borrow life from anywhere. Life flows from Him.
    Colossians 1:17
“And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”
The universe itself continues to exist because God sustains it.
The sun rises because Jehovah permits it.
The earth rotates because Jehovah sustains it.

  4. Jehovah Never Changes
One of the greatest blessings of serving the Self-Existent God is His unchanging nature.
People change. Situations change. Nations change. But Jehovah remains constant.
    Malachi 3:6
“For I am the Lord, I do not change.”
    Because God does not change:
    His promises remain sure
    His covenant remains secure
    His love remains constant
    Hebrews 13:8
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
What God did in the days of Abraham, He can still do today.

  5. The Eternal God Works in Human Seasons
Though Jehovah is eternal, He works within human seasons to accomplish His purpose.
    Consider the life of Joseph.
    He experienced betrayal
    He experienced slavery
    He experienced prison
Yet the eternal plan of God was unfolding.
    Genesis 50:20
“You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.”
When God is involved, temporary suffering cannot cancel eternal destiny.
  6. Application: Trust the Eternal God in Temporary Situations
Many believers panic because they focus on temporary problems.
    But Scripture reminds us:
    2 Corinthians 4:18
“The things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Your present trouble is not permanent.
A storm may last a night
A delay may last a season
A struggle may last a moment
    But Jehovah remains forever.
    Psalm 46:1
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
If the Eternal God is your refuge, no temporary storm can destroy your destiny.
  7. The Comfort of Knowing Jehovah
Knowing Jehovah as the Self-Existent One gives believers confidence.
    Because God is eternal:
Your life is in safe hands
    Your future is secured
    Your destiny cannot be erased
    Isaiah 41:10
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.”
The God who existed before your problem will still exist after your problem disappears.

Conclusion

Jehovah is the Self-Existent One.
He…
has no beginning
has no ending
depends on nothing
sustains everything
He is the Eternal God ruling over temporary circumstances.
So when life becomes uncertain, remember the words of Psalm 90:2:
“From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

Prayer

O Jehovah, the Eternal and Self-Existing God,
we acknowledge that You alone are the source of life.
Teach us to trust You beyond what we see.
Strengthen our faith in every season of life.
Because You are from everlasting to everlasting,
let Your eternal power sustain us and lead us into Your divine purpose.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
