Introduction
Good morning, beloved.
What I’m about to share with you is not just a sermon, it is a word that can set someone free today.
Have you ever looked at your family and asked yourself, “Why does this keep happening to us?”
Maybe it’s poverty. Maybe it’s broken marriages. Maybe it’s addiction, anger, sickness, or shame. Generation after generation, the same pain, the same struggle, the same chains.
You’re not imagining it. There is something real going on, and today, God wants to address it.
What is a generational curse?
A generational curse is a pattern of pain, sin, or bondage that is passed down from one generation to the next, like an invisible chain tied to a family bloodline.
The Bible is very clear about this. In Exodus 20:5, God says:
“I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.”
Now, don’t be afraid of that verse. God is not being cruel. He is telling us something very important: the choices of our ancestors have consequences that can follow us.
Think about it this way. If a father is an alcoholic, his children grow up in a broken home. Those children learn broken ways, and if nothing changes, their children repeat the same pattern. The curse travels not just through spiritual doors, but through wounds, habits, beliefs, and behaviours passed down like a family inheritance nobody asked for.In Numbers 14:18, the Bible says the sins of the fathers are visited upon the children. We see it with Abraham, who lied about his wife Sarah to protect himself, and years later, his son Isaac did the SAME thing with his wife Rebekah (Genesis 26:7). The pattern repeated!
That’s a generational curse at work.
The signs of bondage
How do you know if a generational curse is operating in your life?
Look for these signs:
- Repeated patterns — divorce, addiction, depression, poverty, rebellion, happening over and over in your family.
- Unexplained struggles — you’re doing everything right, but something always seems to pull you back.
- Spiritual dryness — you want to go forward with God, but something invisible keeps pulling you backward.
- Early deaths, chronic illness, physical patterns that follow a bloodline.
In John 5, there was a man lying at the Pool of Bethesda. He had been sick for 38 years. Thirty-eight years! Jesus walked up to him and asked a question that seems strange: “Do you want to be made well?”
Why did Jesus ask that? This is because sometimes people get so used to their bondage that they don’t even believe freedom is possible. Some of us have lived in generational cycles so long, we think it’s just “how our family is.”
But beloved, that is a LIE from the enemy.
Jesus is the chain breaker
Now here is the GOOD NEWS, and I need you to hear this loudly in your spirit today:
Jesus Christ came to break every generational curse.
In Galatians 3:13, the Bible says: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”
Jesus did not just die for your personal sins. He died to break the curse. He hung on that cross and took every generational chain with Him.
That sickness that followed your family — Jesus bore it.
That poverty mentality — Jesus broke it.
That spirit of addiction — Jesus defeated it.
That cycle of broken relationships — Jesus redeemed it.
Look at the woman in Luke 13:10–17. She had been bent over, crippled by a spirit for 18 years. Eighteen years of bondage! She couldn’t even stand up straight. And when Jesus saw her, He didn’t wait for her to beg. He called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.”
He laid His hands on her, and immediately she stood up straight and praised God.
The religious leaders were angry, but Jesus said, “Should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day?”
Did you hear what Jesus called her? A daughter of Abraham. He was saying, “She has a covenant! She has a right to be free!”
So do you beloved.
You are a child of God. You have a covenant through the blood of Jesus, and that blood is more powerful than any curse your grandfather carried, any sin your grandmother committed, any chain your family has dragged for decades.
The blood of Jesus speaks louder than the curse.
How to break free
Freedom doesn’t just happen automatically. You must receive it and walk in it.
Here is what you must do:
- Acknowledge it.
Don’t hide from the truth. Confess the patterns. In Leviticus 26:40, God told Israel, “If they confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors…” It begins with honest confession. - Renounce it.
Verbally reject what has been passed to you. Speak it out loud: “I renounce every generational sin and curse in my bloodline in the name of Jesus.” - Apply the Blood.
Plead the blood of Jesus over your life and your family. Revelation 12:11 says “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” - Break the pattern.
Make different choices. Seek counselling if needed. Get into the Word of God. Let the Holy Spirit rewire what was broken. - Declare your freedom.
Say it with your mouth, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”. Joshua 24:15.
Beloved, you are not your parents’ worst moments. You are not your grandparents’ mistakes. You are not the sum of everything that went wrong before you.
You are a NEW creation in Christ Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says “The old has gone, the new is here!”
The chain stops with YOU.
The cycle breaks in YOUR generation.
The curse ends at the CROSS.
So today, right now, lift your hands if you’re ready to be free. Receive it. Walk in it. Live it.
In the name of Jesus, every generational curse is broken.
Every chain is loosed.
Every bondage is destroyed.
Go free, and never go back.
